HMH – Leading the Way in Alcohol Free Segment – Targets Developers during Cityscape Global 2014 in Dubai

Widening choice of dry hotel brands in the Middle East is putting pressure on the once virgin market. However, companies carrying the alcohol-free flag as a ‘chain’ are numbered. HMH – Hospitality Management Holdings is among the few and the first ‘hotel groups’ in the Middle East to have heralded the trend. Speaking on the sidelines of Cityscape Global 2014 in Dubai, Laurent A. Voivenel, CEO of HMH – Hospitality Management Holdings, commented, “Dry hotels are no doubt the most challenging business proposition when it comes to expansion – more so in the 5-star segment. However, it is a fast growing sector that will continue to claim bigger market share and we were successful in penetrating it early”.

Travel to the Middle East is expected to grow strongly over the next 10 years, with the region’s strategic location and investment in airports and infrastructure establishing it as an important global hub. Six cities in GCC – Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Jeddah, Muscat and Riyadh – represent over 124,000 hotel rooms and have seen supply soar in recent years. In Dubai a further 160,000 rooms are needed by the World Expo in 2020. Laurent stressed, “A vital part of this growth is coming from the Muslim market as well as those looking for safe environment, and the importance of catering to this demographic is starting to be recognized by players across the board. Therefore, we are witnessing renewed confidence in the dry hotel segment with increasing demand from both owners and travellers. And Cityscape offers an excellent opportunity to explore such options.”

Laurent said, “As far as market positioning goes, the strategic focus for our group remains on building investor and consumer perception to view HMH and its various brands as ‘safe’ indigenous brands offering great value in every aspect and segment”.

Laurent stated, “Global brands have been slow to recognize the opportunities in both alcohol free and mid-market segment in this part of the world. We at HMH spotted the niche back in 2003 and had a head-start offering a complete choice of brands defined around a ‘safe environment philosophy’ from luxury to budget to both hotel owners and guests. What is critical to understand is entire portfolio of brands under HMH is alcohol free irrespective of the destination we operate in unlike most groups that may offer only one brand as alcohol free”.

“Over the years we gained outstanding experience and expertise in this segment that allows us to stay ahead of the competition by capitalizing on our market insights and extensive customer network. At HMH we have invested considerably in brand innovation and refreshment that has helped us to consolidate our presence in the market. Our digital strategy revolves around  ‘ease of use’ and involving the consumer for better online conversion. One of our greatest achievements has been integration of latest technology with our booking and distribution channels that are at par with leading international brands giving us an enormous edge.”

Cityscape has grown substantially – by 25 per cent this year – with organisers stating that it is the largest event since its peak in 2008. Over 35,000 visitors, including property investors, developers, investment promotion authorities, architects, designers and other real estate professionals are anticipated to attend the show. Developers across the UAE have already announced plans to launch and showcase major projects during the exhibition, which is now in its 13th year.

CEO Laurent A. Voivenel Represents HMH – Hospitality Management Holdings at Leading Hospitality Conferences & Forums

As an industry expert and prominent hotelier, Laurent A. Voivenel, CEO of HMH – Hospitality Management Holdings, is on the panel of some of the region’s most significant hospitality conferences and forums. It is not easy for him to do so considering his extremely busy schedule but he believes it is essential to participate.

Be it the ‘Hospitality Middle East Summit’, ‘Hotelier Middle East: Great GM Debate 2014’ or the upcoming ‘The Hotel Show: Vision Conference 2014’ and ‘Hospitality Expansion Middle East Conference’, Laurent has been passionately putting his perspective across. And it is not just his towering personality that gives him  an edge. Rather it is his thorough understanding of the business that makes his voice and opinion so compelling.

Laurent stated, “It is a very significant period for our industry and as senior executives and businessmen it becomes our responsibility to exchange ideas and promote change. There are many interesting developments shaping the hospitality and tourism landscape in the region. Projects are increasing in size, complexity, risks and costs. At the same time clients are demanding much more. These changes are creating both challenges and opportunities for all of us. Conferences such as the ones we are participating in are excellent platforms to have open discussions with other experts as well as debate pressing issues. These offer a great setting for sharing new ideas by juxtaposition of existing and future frontiers”.

Equally important for Laurent is to put the HMH view point across while sharing the company’s unique experiences and insights. He said, “We were the first hotel chain in the Middle East to offer alcohol-free safe environment as a group back in 2003. And we are not selective in doing so – neither in terms of brands nor destinations. No matter which part of the globe we operate and under which brand, we would comply with our policy of being alcohol free. So definitely this places us in a very unique position and has over the years helped us to gather an amazing experience both in terms of operations and marketing intelligence. Similarly, the challenges we face are different from other brands”.

Laurent believes the scale of opportunity in the region for hotels especially in the budget segment is unprecedented – an opportune time for the industry to put its act together so all can benefit. He highlighted, “The Middle East is entering a new era of stability with increased connectivity and expansion of existing infrastructure. The region is seeing strong economic and tourism growth. Current estimates suggest that over the next 20 years, upwards of $3 trillion will go directly into leisure and tourism and indirectly into the supporting infrastructure. Through projects announced to date, by 2020 the region will add airport capacity for 300 million extra passengers, build over 200 new hotels, add 100,000 additional rooms, grow visitor numbers to 150 million, and increase the size of its aircraft fleet by over 150% by 2025. With the leisure and business travel sectors both set to double in size, the region’s forecasts suggest annual travel and tourism revenues could increase 89% over the next 10 years”.

For Laurent collaboration is the key to addressing the upcoming challenges. He stressed, “Talking openly about shared problems is the most effective way to develop solutions. The only way to achieve success is if investors, developers, operators, hoteliers and policymakers work together to address the critical issues on the table. Our industry requires collaborative solutions. A huge amount of useful knowledge and experience exists within each group. If companies can learn from the mistakes and successes of others then the whole of the industry can benefit”.

PARK REGIS KRIS KIN HOTEL, DUBAI TARGETS RUSSIAN MARKET AT MAJOR TRAVEL EXHIBITION

Delegates from the Park Regis Kris Kin Dubai joined colleagues from the Dubai Department of Tourism & Commerce Marketing at the OTDYKH Leisure travel exhibition in Moscow this month in a bid to capture an increased share of the lucrative Russian market.

The show, now in its 20th year, is a major showcase for all sectors of the tourism industry with 1,500 exhibitors from 100 countries and an estimated audience of more than 60,000 visitors from both Russia and the CIS countries.

According to General Manager of the Park Regis Kris Kin, Scott Butcher, the region remains a prime source market for the hotel, which offers a prime location with easy links to all major retail, tourist and entertainment sites:  “The Russian market is one where shopping is a major draw, as well as other urban attractions, and the package we offer at the Park Regis Kris Kin combining value pricing and strategic access to all of Dubai is a big draw which we hope to showcase at the OTDYKH Leisure exhibition,” he said.

Russia remains the fifth largest source market for Dubai with 196,392 arrivals during the first half of 2014, according to DTCM statistics, and numbers are expected to surge with the launch of non-stop daily flights by flydubai between Dubai and Moscow this month.

“Although there has been a dip in numbers from the Russian market this year, increased direct airline access to Dubai is a big incentive and the timing of the OTDYKH Leisure is ideal to promote the emirate as a destination that can fulfill the requirements for varied sectors from winter sunshine to luxury, city break, MICE and medical tourism,” added Mr Butcher.

Park Regis Kris Kin Hotel Dubai is conveniently located opposite Burjuman Shopping Centre adjacent to the Dubai Metro few minutes’ drive from the airport and within easy reach of the city’s major leisure and business establishments. The 390-room 5-star hotel is the ideal address for both business and leisure travellers enjoying close proximity to Dubai Museum, Spice Souk, Gold Souk and Dubai World Trade Centre. It boasts a range of superb restaurants, a sports bar; rooftop pool, fitness centre, event facilities for up to 220 people and a business centre. Room amenities include free Wi-Fi, interactive TV system with 100+ channels, desk and mini-bar, tea- and coffee-making equipment, designer bathrooms and 24-hour room service.

HMH CEO Laurent A. Voivenel Joins Top Panellists at Hotel Show: Vision Conference 2014

Laurent A. Voivenel, CEO, HMH – Hospitality Management Holdings was among top industry experts speaking on ‘Development and Growth of Mid-Range Hotels’ at Hotel Show: Vision Conference 2014. Dubai has announced plans to accelerate the development of mid-market hotelsin order to widen its appeal to expanding middle class worldwide and HMH isa key player in the region in the segment. The group is now looking to position ECOS Hotels, a’no frills’ B & B brand in view of the growing demand for budget hotels.

At the moment, 5-star hotels dominate Dubai’s hotel inventory with a market share exceeding 60 per cent. According to Dubai Department of Tourism & Commerce Marketing (DTCM) statistics, Dubai currently boasts 634 hotels and hotel apartments with 88,680 keys. This number is expected to almost double touching 160,000 rooms within the next 6 years by Dubai Expo 2020. However, out of the existing stock of hotels only 10 per cent of room supply is in the upper midscale and midscale segments. But this is set to change as nearly 30 per cent of hotels will be in the mid-market category in the upcoming pipeline.

Stressing on why mid-market hotels make more sense than ever today in Dubai, and must be seen as an opportunity beyond Dubai Expo 2020, Laurent stated, “Expanding middle class in key source markets and growing outbound travel from those countries is the primary reason behind this rising demand for economy hotels in Dubai. According to industry reports, by 2030, globally the middle class will more than double in size, from 2 billion today to 4.9 billion. European and American middle class will shrink from 50 per cent of the total to just 22 per cent. Rapid growth in China, India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia will cause Asia’s share of the new middle class to more than double from its current 30%. By 2030, Asia will host 64% of the global middle class. And these are emerging feeder markets for Dubai”.

Laurent continued, “Having said so, among the key factors driving demand for Dubai as a world-class destination is also the city’s strategic location and excellent airline network and connectivity. Over 2/3 of the world’s population lives within 8 hours flight from Dubai while 1/3 lives within 4 hours making it extremely accessible for this growing middle class through the rapidly expanding network of low-cost carriers and addition of new routes by existing airlines. And therefore the emirate needs to prepare its accommodation offering in order to cater to this massive market. Clearly the vision of Dubai is to get a bigger share of budget travellers than it currently has while retaining its appeal in the luxury segment. And we at HMH are ideally placed to penetrate this largely untapped segment.ECOS Hotels is a smart choice for investors offering strong investment opportunity because of lower construction and operating costs and quickand high return on investment”.

Along with Laurent A. Voivenel, CEO of HMH – Hospitality Management Holdings, The Hotel Show: Vision Conference 2014 panel included YousufLootah, Executive Director, Tourism Development & Investments, Dubai Department of Tourism & Commerce Marketing; Christopher Hewett, Senior Consultant, TRI Hospitality Consulting; Steven Miller, FAIA, RIBA  and SumatiMurari, Vice President – Hotels & Hospitality Group, Middle East & Africa, Jones Lang LaSalle. The panel was chaired by Russel Sharpe, Chief Operating Officer, Citymax Hotels.
